From June 4 to 6, 2025, the PrEP in South America project participated in one of the leading scientific events in the region focused on sexual health and HIV prevention: the Brazilian Society of STIs Congress, the Latin American Congress on STIs/HIV/AIDS, and the Brazilian Congress on AIDS, held at the ExpoMag Convention Center, in Cidade Nova, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil. During the congress, the project coordinators, André Machado and Kris H. Oliveira, presented two papers in e-poster format:
“Brazil, a Model Country? PrEP Policies for HIV Prevention in South America”
A critical analysis of Brazil’s role as a regional reference in the HIV response and in the implementation of public PrEP policies.
“Scientific Production on PrEP for HIV Prevention: A Scoping Review (2001–2024)”
An original mapping of the global literature on PrEP, highlighting inequalities in the participation of the Global South and the predominance of biomedical approaches in the field.

The events brought together health professionals, influencers, researchers, and activists from various Latin American countries to discuss public policies, prevention strategies, and current challenges in addressing sexually transmitted infections.
The discussions covered key issues such as:
🔹 Educação sexual
🔹 Gênero e sexualidade
🔹 Comunicação em saúde
🔹 Políticas de prevenção ao HIV
The project’s participation was also an opportunity to exchange experiences, present ongoing research, and strengthen dialogues on PrEP across different regional contexts.
More than a space for scientific exchange, the congress established itself as a territory of listening, sharing, and collective knowledge-building, reaffirming PrEP in South America’s commitment to the promotion of sexual health and the defense of human rights in the region.
