PrEP South America at the 14th Abrascão and the 12th ABETH Congress
Written by Kris H. Oliveira and Thiago Peniche
Researchers from the PrEP South America project participated in two important scientific meetings in the country in the fields of Public Health and Gender and Sexuality Studies. Eight papers were presented at the 14th Brazilian Congress of Collective Health (Abrascão), and one panel at the 12th Congress of the Brazilian Association for Trans-Homoculture Studies (ABETH), both held in Brasília.
The Abrascão, which took place between November 28 and December 3, is the main national congress on Collective Health, bringing together faculty members, professionals, students, and social movements since its creation in 1986. The ABETH, held from November 25 to 30, brings together a community of LGBTQIAPN+ researchers and allies who investigate gender and sexuality from intersectional perspectives, with special attention to the knowledge produced by dissident bodies.

Project strengthening
For the coordinators of PrEP South America, Kris H. Oliveira and André Machado das Neves, the in-person meeting marked the trajectory of the project. They highlight that:
“Abrascão, in Brasília, was a fundamental meeting space for researchers from PrEP South America, especially considering that many had not yet met in person. The in-person exchange strengthened the affective and collaborative ties that sustain the project.”

In addition to strengthening the team, the coordinators also believe that the congress served as a platform to broaden the reach of the results:
"The congress allowed us to present our results to a wider audience, who were able to learn more about the work developed and have their questions answered."
With participation in oral presentations, poster sessions, training activities, and panel discussions, the event reinforced the project's visibility, broadened the dialogue with the Public Health community, provided an important update on discussions in the field, and inspired new avenues for research.
Presented works
At both events, 14 researchers from PrEP South America presented reflections on PrEP public policies, health communication, intersectionality, and preliminary results from multicenter research conducted in partnership with institutions in South America.
