PrEP South America takes another important step in consolidating and expanding its international research networks with the development of Kris Herik de Oliveira's postdoctoral research at the Centre for Critical Global Change, Goldsmiths, University of London, under the supervision of Professor Fay Dennis. Started in February 2026, the postdoctoral internship is expected to last one year and is part of the academic activities of the institution's Department of Sociology.
Entitled “Access, Use, and Management of PrEP for HIV Prevention: A Comparative Approach between South America and Western Europe”, the postdoctoral project represents a direct extension of the PrEP América do Sul project and strengthens its comparative and international dimension. The initiative establishes an institutional partnership between the Higher School of Health Sciences of the State University of Amazonas, represented by Prof. Dr. André Machado, and Goldsmiths, University of London, promoting academic exchange, scientific cooperation, and new possibilities for collaboration between South America and the United Kingdom.
In Oliveira’s words:
While PrEP América do Sul focuses on ethnographic research in South America, the postdoctoral project proposes expanding the comparative dimension to Western Europe, with fieldwork in London, in order to promote intercultural dialogue, the comparison of experiences and policies, as well as mutual learning between the regions. Following the lessons learned from PrEP América do Sul, the research is based on the idea that HIV prevention must be ethical, intersectional, community-informed, and globally dialogical.
International expansion of the project
While the PrEP South America project investigates, from an ethnographic approach, the access, use, and management of PrEP in South American countries, the postdoctoral research expands this agenda to a comparative dialogue with Western Europe, using London as a strategic field of investigation. The proposal is to analyze how different sociopolitical contexts, health systems, and community dynamics shape experiences surrounding PrEP.
From a methodological point of view, the research involves three main fronts: 1) analysis of PrEP public policies in Western Europe; 2) interviews with PrEP users and managers of dispensing services; 3) participant observation in sexual health services.
By promoting this international expansion, the project creates opportunities for collaborative production, strengthens South-North academic partnerships, broadens dialogue with community organizations, and encourages the exchange of experiences on public policies and emerging challenges related to the implementation, equity, and sustainability of PrEP.
This expansion is expected to allow for comparisons of experiences in different regions, identifying convergences, contextual specificities, and mutual learnings that can contribute to improving HIV prevention strategies on a global scale.
André Machado points out that:
