On November 5th, from 3 pm (Brasília), Professor Richard Parker, Director-President of the Brazilian Association… online conference with the theme “HIV/AIDS, global health and struggles for health justice”. The event, which will be broadcast on the PrEP South America Project channel on YouTube, will mark the end of the subject “Health Anthropology and ethnographic practice”, taught by Profs. Drs. Kris H. de Oliveira and André Machado, from the Postgraduate Program in Public Health at the State University of Amazonas (UEA).
conference will be divided into four moments. Firstly, Parker will contextualize the presentation in the broader context of health anthropology and ethnographic practice, exploring the concept of “positionality” and the use of ethnography in his personal trajectory throughout the HIV/AIDS pandemic as a database for their scientific interpretations.
Next, the professor will trace a genealogy of global health. To do so, it will take as a time frame the beginning and mid-19th century, with the emergence of what was described as “tropical medicine” or “colonial medicine”. From this point on, it will discuss the transformations in health up to its international reinvention as “global health”, a new system that has been consolidated since the beginning of the new millennium.
In the third part of the conference, he will examine the ways in which the response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, over the last 45 years, has been central to the creation of the new (or reinvented) global health system. Subsequently, the discussion will turn to the central role that this response has played in the transformation of the global health system in recent decades.
Finally, Parker will reflect on the contemporary challenges of global health, addressing the influences of neoliberalism, persistent inequalities, and the obstacles facing a new generation of researchers and activists.
Open to the public, the conference is an opportunity for all people interested in discussing the future paths of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, global health and health justice.
